Court Order to Close Emarat Al Youm Undermines Media Freedom

(New York) - A ruling by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal to suspend a local newspaper and fine its editor-in-chief further undermines press freedom in the United Arab Emirates, Human Rights Watch said today. The court decision to uphold the conviction against Emarat Alyoum means that publication of the newspaper will be suspended for 20 days, and its editor, Sami al-Araimi, will be fined 20,000 dirhams (US$5,445), according to reports in another UAE newspaper on July 2, 2009. An October 2006 article published by Emarat Alyoum had alleged that a UAE-based company gave steroids to local race horses owned by the Abu Dhabi royal family. Economic Survey: 2008-09 -Several steps taken to enhance domestic rupee liquidity

The Economic Survey 2008-09 presented to Parliament today by the Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee says, the speed at which the Indian economy returns to the high growth path in the short term depends on the revival of the economy, particularly the US economy and the Government’s capacity to push some critical policy reforms in the coming months. It says, if the US economy bottoms out by September 2009 there would be good possibility for the Indian economy repeating its 2008-09 performance i.e. around 7.0 +/- 0.75 per cent in the fiscal 2009-10 (assuming a normal monsoon). However, in the event of a more prolonged external economic downturn, the revival of the global economy/US economy being delayed until 2010, the growth may moderate to the lower end of the range. It says the recovery is likely to be assisted by the likely developments in the external sectors. . Full Report/More News

Iran Had a Democracy Before We Took It Away

by Chris Hedges

Iranians do not need or want us to teach them about liberty and representative government. They have long embodied this struggle. It is we who need to be taught. It was Washington that orchestrated the 1953 coup to topple Iran’s democratically elected government, the first in the Middle East, and install the compliant shah in power. It was Washington that forced Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh, a man who cared as much for his country as he did for the rule of law and democracy, to spend the rest of his life under house arrest. We gave to the Iranian people the corrupt regime of the shah and his savage secret police and the primitive clerics that rose out of the swamp of the dictator’s Iran. Iranians know they once had a democracy until we took it away..Read the full column by former New York Times journalist from USA

Literary Quotation Team Targets VS

A group of CPM supporters are protesting against the participation of Sukumar Azhikode, M Mukundan and KEN Kunjumohammed in a literary programme organized as part of the Centenary celebrations of Vaikom Muhammed Bashir, a well known Malayali writer. After discrediting the prominent scholar and author late M N Vijayan, the Pinaray group has been promoting the anarchist writer like Mukundan to criticize the chief minister. While they have been good writers and command respect from the public, these self proclaimed literary ambassadors have degenerated into political pimps barking for corrupt leaders. M Mukundan, a popular writer who worked at the cultural exchange desk of the French embassy in New Delhi has been spreading the spirit of anarchism, drug addiction and alcoholism among the disgruntled Malayali youth. When the ideological dispute between the VS and Pinaray faction was getting intense, Mukundan dared to term him as an "Outdated Saint." (Kalaharanapetta Punyavalan) and Mr Pinaray as the "Right leader of our times." Read More

Iran President Re Elected

When a major vote fraud happened in US Presidential Election in 2004, most of the corporate media houses remained silent.. now without any evidence, U.S. politicians and “Iran experts” have dismissed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s reelection Friday, with 62.6 percent of the vote, as fraud. They ignore the fact that Ahmadinejad’s 62.6 percent of the vote in this year’s election is essentially the same as the 61.69 percent he received in the final count of the 2005 presidential election, when he trounced former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. It is a fact that the election results announced on May 16 surprised the entire nation and proved all exit pollsters wrong. It is difficult to assume that all the post election exit polls can be proved equally wrong. While the exit polls predicted a hung parliament, the election result gave a clear majority to the ruling party.
