World AIDS Day is a special day of understanding, compassion, and hope about
AIDS, the epidemic that has killed and affects millions of adults and
children, worldwide. This global event invites everyone worldwide to
consider what they can do to prevent the transmission of the HIV virus and
to encourage people to break down the barriers of discrimination and stigma
experienced by those living with HIV.

* 5 million people became infected in 2001
* 800,000 children became infected in 2001
* 20 million people have died of AIDS since 1981

Even with vaccines in development, a cure for AIDS is still far off.
