Govt Sanskrit
college is totally neglected by the Government, Local Media say
Union Members
Special report by
R.S.Priya
Thiruvananthapuram Oct 31: The Government
Sanskrit college situated in the central point of the city is
one of the most neglected government colleges in the state. As
most of the students in the college are not economically well
off, no one is coming forward to tap the talented students or
give them any kind of encouragement. When the Antony Government
and the UDF constituents are going out of their way to promote
private engineering and medical colleges and fully commercialise
the education sector, the pathetic situation of government colleges
in the sate is self revealing. All over the world education is
an area, which is not fully commercialized. However, the government
of the most literate state in India is shamelessly and systematically
destroying the educational institutions created over a long period
as part of a popular upheaval in the past Full

Sonia Nair, the new College Chairperson elected
unopposed is a Final year Degree (Literature) student. She hails
from a family in Neyyantinkara. She did her schooling at the
Bombay Abhinav Vidhyalaya and the Indian school Muscat. Sonia
says Muscat in Oman has the best of schools, which have really
good infrastructure and provide all modern facilities to students.
According to her educational institutions in the Gulf take a
lot of money. Sonia's family consists of her parents and an younger
sister
"India is quite different. There is lot
of freedom and opportunities. There is also good cooperation
between students and lecturers here.," she says. She received
the prestigious prize for the best outgoing student in school
and participated in a number of inter-school competitions sponsored
by the Indian Embassy. She has to her credit prizes from the
Hindi Prachar Sabha and YMCA for quiz competition.
The Chairperson has also participated in Anvesh-2002
and received an audience prize. In the Kerala University Youth
Festival she missed the prestigious "Kalathilakam"
title by just four points. Being a good orator, Sonia received
the Best Speaker for "Against motion" sponsored by
Intellectual 2003 at the Mohandas Engineering college. She has
also been the Individual champion for the last two consecutive
years (2001-2002 and 2002-2003) for all literary competitions
except Essay writing.
Sonia says that what she likes most about
the college is the Infrastructure facilities, relationship and
unity among students. "Every girl in the college has the
spirit of being part of "All Saints' " she says. All
Saints College is one of the rare colleges in Thiruvananthapuram,
where there is no political party system. Every candidate contests
elections on the basis of their individual abilities and there
is no party rivalry in the college. All the union members feel
that this is a good trend and that there is no need for party
system in colleges. Sonia stressed that there is no need for
party system in colleges because there won't be any rivalries
or political fights among students. The elections would take
place quite peacefully. "Elders know what's best for us,"
she says.
If there is party system there will be lot
of rivalries and polarisation. When asked about the present trends
of online jobs, Sonia says that though such jobs are good, there
won't be much of person-to-person interaction. When asked about
the importance of computer education, she opined that the trend
of computer education is really an important one, but it should
be kept in mind that there shouldn't be outdated syllabus. The
latest in technology should be provided to students and they
should be helped to update their computer knowledge.
Most of the hostelites in "All Saints"
use the Internet, says Sonia. When asked about why she took up
Arts group, she said that B.A. and B.Com provide more chances
of branching out into other fields too. Sonia plans to continue
her literary career. Art is God given gift and the gift to write
is something, which shouldn't be wasted. She said that her main
work as the chairperson would be to organize programmes and also
in listening to the problems of the student community. Sonia's
ambition is to get a job and marriage plans are only after getting
a job.

All Saints Arts Club
Secretary poornima |
Poornima, the Union Arts Club Secretary is
the only daughter of her parents. She did her schooling at Matha
Senior secondary school, Aleppey and the Choice School, Ernakulam
She did her 11th and 12th Standard at St.Mary's Convent. Unlike
others in the Union, she could be called a sports club secretary
too due to her talent in sports. She is an athlete and was a
school champion till 9th standard. The Arts Club Secretary won
several state level prizes in badminton and Tennis.
She is equally interested in dancing. She
feels that she possesses an inborn talent to dance. She participates
in regular dance competitions like Hotch Potch and won prizes.
She also participated in the regional level Essay writing competitions
and drama. In spite of all her extracurricular activities she
feels that some time should be kept separately for studies. When
asked about the common practice of inviting film personalities
to inaugurate Arts Clubs, she said students have more demand
for film-based celebrities. Though it is a general impression
that an Arts Club Secretary needs to have some film background,
Poornima feels that it's not important. Even for Arts Club Inauguration,
many of the film celebrities may not be available because of
date problems. Other non-film celebrities have to be looked for.
Regarding ragging in colleges, Poornima feels that many of the
students give unnecessary complaints.
We respect our seniors and the relationship
between seniors and juniors should be a policy of "Give.
Respect and Take Respect". According to her, the security
measures in All Saints and prohibition of students from going
outside the college without prior permission is good, as it prevents
students from misusing freedom.
Her ambition is to do MBA from the Indian
Institute of Management. She gives importance in being qualified
and for her getting a job is not very important. She plans to
get married after completing her studies.

All Saints Councillors Nandita
and Shabana |
Nanditha
Nandita and Shabana are the councilors of
the college. Nandita basically belongs to Mavelikkara. She did
her schooling at Bethlehem Primary School till 4th standard and
then at Holy Angels ISC, Nanthancode. Her family consists of
her parents and an younger brother. Her interests include music,
dance and literary competitions. She wants to do her M.A. and
M.Phil to become a lecturer outside India. She doesn't mind settling
abroad too. She plans for marriage only after getting a job.

Shabhna and Rajitha
Shabana.K.A, belongs to Pachalloor near Kovalam
and is a member of family consisting of her parents, an elder
brother and a younger sister. She did her schooling till 7th
at Seetha Kingston school (Madras) and after that in Christu
Jyothi school at Changanassery. She did her pre degree in science
group at Changanassery Assumption college and is doing Economics
in All Saints. She switched over from science group to Economics
group due to her interest. "Whatever subjects you study,
study well" she says. She is planning to go for Management
or teaching profession. When asked about the difference she felt
between studying in a co-ed institution and a girls only institution,
she said that though in mixed schools it is good to have great
friends, yet there you won't get the kind of peaceful atmosphere
that you get in a women's only college. The only minus point
which she felt about ladies only college is that, the quiet girls
in the college won't be able to interact much when they go out
into the real world.
She doesn't prefer staying in Thiruvananthapuram
much and one of the reasons is that she feels that the people
here are really narrow-minded. Unlike in other places, where
people are more interactive, the people here don't mingle much.
Yet another reason is that she has to travel a lot to reach the
college as her place is far away from the college.
The main duty of a councillor is to act as
a link between the University and the colleges. It is the councillors
who inform students abut any important notification regarding
examinations or some events organized by the Kerala University.
She is quite interested in taking up a job, but also says that,
if her future husband doesn't want her to take up a job, she
would rather obey him.
Regarding the party system in college elections,
Shabana says elections in which individuals compete on the basis
of individual's talent and ability. In party based elections,
students have to listen to what each party bosses says.
All of the union members are netizens -- they
are quite interested in surfing the Internet. They are mostly
interested news based entertaining sites, which provides scope
for research.
Unlike the previous years, this year's election
witnessed really tough competitions and many candidates. The
newly elected union members plan to do a lot for the college
and students in the coming days. All of them are of the opinion
that the college provides a lot of freedom and a discipline of
its own. It doesn't allow students to misuse their freedom and
this is what they feel is the best feature of All Saints'.

One
party system of Red Radicals in Trivandrum Arts College
From Abu Dhabi Indian School
to All Saints Vice Chairperson
"Mother Teresa was not in any party,
but she did a lot of social service to the world. People say
that they would be able to do a lot for society by joining political
parties, but they are not able to contribute as much as some
individuals like Mother Theresa contributed to the world."
says Rajitha.R.S, the Vice Chairperson of the College.
Rajitha had her schooling at the Abu Dhabi Indian School, UAE
and the Little Flower Primary School till fourth standard. She
was in the Sarvodaya and completed 10th standard from the Cotton
Hill Girls High school. She has been studying in All Saints for
pre degree and degree. She is a B.A.(Eng literature) student
in All Saints College. Her family comprises of her parents and
an elder brother.
She used to participate in literary competitions
right from school days and has won prizes in versification competitions.
She likes dancing and music. She has learned both classical music
and classical dance. Currently she is continuing her classical
music training under Chengannore Thangachi. She is also expanding
her Music skills by learning Veena. Rajitha has won first prize
in All Kerala Balakalotsavam and received gold coin as prize
in the Bhagyalekshmi programme in the popular Kairali channel.
Her ambition is to take LLB and MBA degrees.

She likes the freedom and the general atmosphere
of the college. She feels that there good discipline in the college.
Interaction between students teachers is a good point about the
college. Regarding literary competitions, Rajitha feels that
literary creativity is something sublime and it doesn't create
real work of art through competitions. The competitions do not
bring out the real talents. Rather than conducting such competitions,
it would be better if the works of people who write by inspiration
get published. We don't get inspiration while participating in
literary competitions
Magazine Editor

Anaswara Jose Pampackal is the magazine editor
of the college. Her family comprises of her parents and younger
sister. She studied in Sarvodaya Vidyalaya and entered All Saints
College. She participates in literary and quiz competitions and
won first prize for the English Essay writing competition in
the All Kerala ISC Cultural Meet and first prize (English Essay
writing) competition at college level. Her ambition is to become
a business journalist.!
Regarding All Saints College, she feels that
the authorities provide sufficient opportunities and freedom
to students. Anaswara has a major complaint about the Kerala
University Youth Festival. "There is no English Essay writing
competition in the University Youth Festival. This is something
which ought to be changed", she says. She too plans to get
married after getting a job.
- Young Achievers
- Vinod Kumar- the Malayali
Softball Champion
She feels that there is immense work to be
done by the Magazine Editor. "A Magazine Editor should know
the day to day events in the college, as it is she who lists
them in the annual edition of the college magazine. The duties
of a magazine editor include collecting articles and advertisements
for the Magazine. As a Magazine Editor, Anaswara feels that she
would be able to do her duties really well. Magazine Editor should
have some interest in literary matters.
