Girls outshine boys yet again in class XII CBSE exams
New Delhi, May 23 Maintaining their strong performance at the senior secondary level, girls for the fifth year in succession outsmarted boys in the class XII examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), results for which were declared today.Girls not only did better than boys at the all-India level, but in each of the six regions of the Board. The dominance of girls this year was so strong that there was a huge gap of nearly 12 per cent between their pass percentage (80.33) and that of the boys (68.62).
Announcing the results, CBSE Chairman Ashok Ganguly told reporters that the pass percentage of girls remained stagnant this year, but the performance of boys declined by more than two per cent in comparision to the previous year.
Explaining the reason for girls performing better than boys, the CBSE chairman felt that they were more focussed in studies and also chose subjects with higher possibilities of success. He said overall there was a decline of 1.61 per cent in the number of students who cleared the examinations this year. While last year 75.20 per cent students passed, this year 73.59 per cent of the 366,363 students who undertook the examinations succeeded. He said the reason for the fall in overall pass percentage was due to poor results by certain government schools in the newly created states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, which were affiliated to CBSE recently.
