Arts College Union members
speak to KM

Vipinlal, Vipin Kumar, Arun and Suchithra
all from the SFI dominated Arts College Union
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM -Oct 10, 2003 In a brief
chat with KM Correspondent Priya R S , the newly elected Union
members of Government Arts college who are preparing to govern
a college of around 565 students, expressed their views on the
college elections and on their political background. The Arts
College in the capital city has a unique one-party system and
during elections no parties fight for votes. The one and only
party, which rules the college is the SFI and the students of
the college seem to be supporting this trend.
The new College Chairman , Vipin Lal who is doing his final year in B.A. (Economics) feels
that the students don't overtly show any kind of opposition to
the present single party system in the college. SFI is the main
party in the college and this party decides its candidates, who
are nominated as union members. Therefore there is no party fight
in the college. They also raised concern about the increasing
fees burden and other problems facing the student community. More
SFI Emerges Victorious in
Trivandrum College Unions
by Priya R S KM correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: In the not so hot college
Union elections held today in some colleges where the student
political party system still prevails, SFI seems to have strengthened
its hold. In the election, majority of students voted for candidates
belonging to the Student Federation of India, the students wing
of the communist party of India (Marxist). The elections took
place in most of the colleges by noon and the votes were counted
by evening. In the past, colleges witnessed intense political
campaign during the union elections. The state has a wide network
of schools and colleges from where many leading state politicians
started their political career.

College Union Elections
happened unexpectedly without the traditional euphorica in college
campuses. Due to the Court verdict in favour of holding elections,
many students were apparently not mentally prepared to the ballot
battle. Do you think college elections are becoming unpopular
among the student community of Kerala? |

Among the colleges where election was held, All Saints had is
no party system and the students themselves choose the right
candidates. Intense campaigning by impendent candidates was witnessed
in the girl's college. Sonia G.Nair, a third year in B.A was
the sole candidate for the coveted post of Chairman. Naturally,
there was no question of competition for the Chairpersons post.

Thiruvananthapuram: The College Union Elections
scheduled for Oct 10 would take place on that day itself, following
the court giving permission for the elections. Earlier the principals
of different colleges had filed a case at the High Court to stop
elections due to the increasing politicisation in campus elections.
However, the High Court gave permission for conducting elections.
Wide campaigning has been going on in the various colleges here
and the students had been active in their campaigning work for
the past few days. In quite a few colleges, the candidates have
already been chosen without any kind of opposition. But the details
