Malayali Freelance Travel Agents Vanish with RO 30,000

Muscat - Two more Muscat Malayalis have absconded duping a number of travel agents. Suresh Philiph and his associate Jacob who have been working as freelance travel agents in the capital region have left Oman a week back leaving minimum RO 30,000 unpaid due to be paid to various travel agents in lieu of the tickets bought on credit.

The duo used to market air ticket of various airlines among expatriates, buy the air ticket on short term credit from travel agents and make commission and a small margin. With the connivance of some insiders in travel agents, they managed to get credit for big amounts. Recently, there have been reports that certain people were selling tickets to Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikkodu and other Indian destinations offering considerable discount. After selling a lot of tickets at cheap rate, they collected ready cash from customers. Instead of repaying the money due to travel agents who gave them tickets, the Malayali duo have allegedly absconding with the money, equivalent to more than Indian Rs. 30 lakhs.

The travel agents realised their foul play only when some of the cheqaues issued by the culprits bounced. By that time Suresh and Jacob have already left Muscat. Many eyebrows were raised when the Malayalis were offering air ticket at damn cheap rate. At least four leading travel agents in Muscat including Al Jazeera Travels, Jalan Travels and the United Travels, have lost minimum RO 7500 each. A police complaint has been launched by one of the affected travel agents to nab the culprits.

Suresh is from Thiruvananthapuram. Some of the Malayali staff in the travel agents are also being questioned as to how they gave huge credit to freelance travel agents.Due to the lack of an extradition agreement between India and various Gulf countries, the tendency to commit white collar crime and abscond has been growing. A number of Malayalis, especially in the marketing field, have duped their companies or clients and absconded with huge outstanding amounts.
