Shell appoints new Country Chair for Dubai and Northern Emirates

July 3, 2005 The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies has announced the appointment of Charles Watson as Country Chair for Shell in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. He replaces Ron van den Berg who retired recently. Watson will also serve in a co-ordination role as “cluster Chair” for Iraq, Jordan and Yemen. Take the Message of Eternal India to the World, Singh tells IFS Probotioners

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has said that the foremost task before the country is to accelerate social and economic growth processes within a democratic framework. Addressing the 2004 batch of Indian Foreign Service probationers, Dr. Singh said that in the present era of interdependence there was a need to develop cooperation among States to tackle formidable problems like environmental degradation and chronic poverty. Foreign Service officers should project India’s values and concerns to the outside world, he added.

Replying to a question by a probationer regarding economic diplomacy overcoming the problems with our neighbouring countries, the Prime Minister said that there were large number of economic complimentarities and there was a growing realisation that countries of the region are missing out the great potential for economic and social cooperation. So far India Pakistan relations have proved to be the stumbling block in carrying forward the processes of regional co-operation. Dr. Singh hoped that a new relationship with Pakistan can be found whereby a sustained effort would be made to resolve outstanding bilateral problems, however, these problems should not block possibilities of economic cooperation.

Mentioning the role of State and non-State actors in promoting terrorism, the Prime Minister reiterated the need for sustained struggle against terrorism while dealing with other problems like disease, poverty and inequality. Dr. Singh also highlighted India’s role as responsible nuclear power and underlined the need for blocking any further unauthorised proliferation of nuclear weapons. India was ready to cooperate with like-minded countries in this regard. In securing a favourable international environment we should fight against any efforts of technology denial, Dr. Singh said. The Prime Minister stressed the need for understanding the forces that are shaping India’s external and internal environment. The Prime Minister pointed out that deep understanding of civilisational values and India’s national interest should be deployed to create a space for this great nation to realise its destiny.

On administrative reforms, Dr. Singh said that performance appraisal have to be the backbone of Government services. Explaining the emerging trends in economic diplomacy Dr. Singh said that compartmentalisation of the various facets of diplomacy should not be overdone, as complex situations today required an interdisciplinary approach. The Prime Minister also said that in a democracy thinking people should not shun the political process. An environment would be created where more people from enlightened middle classes would come into public life for which we would have to work towards electoral reforms, Dr. Manmohan Singh added.

BATELCO SENDS YOUNG CHAMPION TO QATAR OPEN

Batelco is helping young Bahraini athlete, Nadia Aqeel, to continue her quest for international glory and world-class medals at this week’s Qatar Open Bowling Championships. At the tender age of just 21, Nadia is already a central figure on the international bowling circuit with two Arab Championships to her name -most recently winning the Batelco Bahrain Open, which was held at Bahrain’s Funland Bowling Centre in Manama last month.

Nadia and her Bahrain National Squad teammate, Mohammed Janahi, are respresenting Bahrain in the Qatar Open - which will see more than 100 bowlers from around the world compete for a prize fund of some US$100,000 – and Nadia has already demonstrated that she is on form by qualifying for the Open’s semi-finals, which are being held tonight (Wednesay, 28th June).

Nadia’s competitive bowling career began when she was just nine years old and she already has a string of titles and trophies to her name – including first place in the universities championship for the United Kingdom, where she is a student at the University of Hull.

Bahrain’s young bowler is friendly and outgoing, but very serious about her sport. She trains daily whether she’s here or in the UK and has her eyes firmly set on the World Cup.

“My ambition is to achieve a good result in the World Cup,” explains Nadia. “In order to fulfill this goal, I have to work hard and sometimes it can be difficult to combine a challenging University course with my training. However, I have put a lot of time and effort into it during the past 10 years and, in return, received an enormous amount of enjoyment and satisfaction. Bowling – especially the International side – has given me some wonderful opportunities to see other countries and meet so many interesting people.”

“I owe a great deal of thanks to Batelco. The company’s sponsorship of both the Batelco Bahrain National Team and also of my individual endeavours has helped make it possible for me to compete and win,” explains Nadia. “Winning gives me a great feeling that I’m giving something back to my country and to other young Bahraini athletes who might be inspired by my performance.”

Dubai International Airport Tunnel Project

Dubai Municipality has started enhancing the road network to reduce the traffic congestion in the city. For this it has developed the Ras Al Khor as an axis to connect Al Khail Road through the fourth crossing and Airport Tunnel in the Qusais area and Sharjah. This axis is considered to be an alternative route for Emirates Road so that the traffic congestion on that road will be reduced by 2,700 vehicles per hour during the peak hours. This axis, which will also have a positive impact on Al Ithihad Road, is expected to save about 10,000 hours of the road users a day.

Dubai International Airport Tunnel is considered to be an important step in constructing this new axis. The Airport Tunnel, considered to be the biggest such tunnel in the Middle East, comprises of eight lanes with a capacity for 8,000 vehicles per hour to each direction. The total length of the tunnel is 2.2 km. The project involves a main 1.516 km tunnel between the Al Quds/Beirut Road and Airport road/Nadd Al Hamar intersections across Dubai International Airport. The Beirut Road or Rashidiya Road will be abandoned to facilitate the airport expansion programme.

The project also involves a group of branch tunnels that are 1.115 km long at Airport Road intersection with Nadd Al Hamar Road in order to ease traffic movement coming from and to the tunnel.Apart from the main structure of the tunnel, an elevated 440 metre long bridge was constructed at the north entrance of the tunnel above Al Quds/Beirut Road intersection and two other elevated bridges, each 200 metres long at Airport Road/Nadd Al Hamar intersection. The project, with a total cost of Dhs686 million, was accomplished within 24 months time.

The tunnel structure comprises of concrete passages for extending cables and other services covered by concrete tiles, which will form foot path for services and maintenance. The security part of the tunnel is also taken care of during its construction. Utilities related to tunnel safety include most advanced means for safety monitoring and communication system to ensure incessant movement inside the tunnel with ease and safety. Two buildings have been constructed adjacent to the tunnel, one on the south side and the other on the north. Apart from this the tunnel also include electricity feeding station, control room for monitoring traffic movement and other safety equipments inside the tunnel. The project also includes landscaping at the intersections on the north and south entrances of the tunnel, decorating the walls of the tunnel with ceramic paintings reflecting the architectural development and heritage of Dubai. With the completion of this project Dubai has accomplished another landmark in its march towards modernizing its infrastructure.

Gargash Enterprises, Mercedes-Benz general distributor for DaimlerChrysler AG, in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, to use Shell lubricants

Specially-designed oil by Shell and Mercedes is environmentally friendly and ensures longer engine life

June 29, 2005 Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Shell) announced today (Wednesday, June 29, 2005), that all Mercedes cars sold by Gargash Enterprises, the Mercedes-Benz general distributor for DaimlerChrysler AG, in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, will use Shell Helix Ultra AB, a special lubricant blended in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. International. With this partnership, Gargash Enterprises becomes the first Mercedes dealer in the Middle East to use Shell lubricants products. Shell Lubricants was recently named a 2004 DaimlerChrysler (the Mercedes-Benz parent company) supplier of the year for outstanding performance in the European market. “Through the years, Mercedes has maintained its image as makers of some of the finest cars, which are not only known for the quality of their performance and elegant styling, but are also a status symbol around the world. As the distributors for Mercedes-Benz cars in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, it is our priority to ensure the best performance of the cars. In line with our policy of continuous improvement and maximum customer satisfaction, we decided to provide customers with Shell’s high quality oil, imported from Germany, which retains the high residual value of Mercedes-Benz,” said Richard Barber, General Manager, Gargash Enterprises.

Speaking at a press conference in Dubai to announce the partnership, Quentin Freddie D’Silva, General Manager, Shell Middle East and Central Asia, said: “Shell shares a long history of successful partnership with Mercedes-Benz as Shell lubricants are being used in cars and trucks around the world. Our new partnership with Gargash Enterprises means we can now extend our association with Mercedes cars in the UAE, as all these cars are filled with special Shell grade oil when they leave the Mercedes plant in Stuttgart, Germany. All our products are developed to industry requirements and international standards.” “Our partnership with Gargash Enterprises represents a synergy of two leading brands that share common values and a constant focus on providing top quality products and services to customers,” he added.

DaimlerChrysler Middle East recently commended Gargash Enterprises for achieving record sales in 2004 and it also received the top dealership award from HSBC. This mutually beneficial alliance will ensure the growth of both parties as we expand our operations in the region,” concluded Barber.

Shell lubricants have been shown to increase gear life in Mercedes-Benz axle and transmission tests. In addition, the use of Shell lubricants results in a significant increase in the service life of gear teeth and bearings, and improvements in temperature levels. Use of Shell oil also supports rapid oil flow characteristics and ensures protection on engine start-up even in cold conditions.“Shell lubricants ensure longer engine life with the use of high quality additives and protective agents to prevent sludge formation. Moreover, the relevance of Shell lubricants to the Middle East market is amplified, as all lubricants are specially formulated to reduce CO2 emissions, making them environmentally friendly,” highlighted D’Silva.
