TEACHING OF SOCIAL SCIENCE IN SCHOOLS

New Delhi: August 18, 2001: In the national Curriculum Framework for School Education 2000, NCERT has made recommendations for an integrated thematic approach for developing social science curriculum for classes VI to X. In place of four textbooks separately for History, Geography, Civics and Economics, only one textbook in social science will be prepared now, said the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Murli Manohar Joshi in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. This will be introduced in a phased manner starting from April, 2002 session.

Joshi said the proposal of reducing quantum of history as proposed in the national Curriculum Framework for School Education is particularly relevant for primary, upper primary and secondary stages. No particular parts, periods or personalities are proposed to be deleted. Only the details which are relevant to the learners’ needs at these stages will be retained. The balanced and relevant history will be suitably integrated with the content of the other social science subjects. This will be done in order to (I) reduce the curriculum load which is a matter of common concern and (ii) make the study of social science a balanced experience necessary for leading a useful and successful life of a citizen, he told Rajyasabha Members.
