All over the world Indians celebrate Independence day with enthusiasm and spirit of patriotism. Various Indian community organisations in the Gulf Region, especially the Indian Embassies and Indian Schools celebrated the 54th anniversay of Indian Independence. However, what differentiated an independence day celebration in Molanda Indian Schoolin Oman was the presence of Royal Oman Police personnel to mediate tricolour flag hoisting by the convenor of the school because a section of the parents opposed his presence in the Republic Day Celebrations. According to a section of the parents, the poor moral standards of one of the board members who had allegedly misbehaved with a lady candidate for teachers post. Normally the School President is supposed to hoist the triclour flag during Independence Day Celebrations.

However, this year the School Board decided that the school convenor-- who is the accused to be the villain in the Chennai Recruitment Drama--will hoist the tricolour. Due to opposition, the School Authorities finally called the Royal Oman Police and the celebrations went on smoothly. A section of parents registered their strong protest and gave a formal complaint to the School President, copies of which are given to the Indian Ambassador, who is the patron of the school. According to official sources, the school authorities obtained prior permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indian Embassy and the Royal Oman Police to conduct the celebrations. What a spirit of patriotism and nationalism in a foreign land.

The whole drama may be part of a power struggle within the school management but the event should be an eye opener to all Indians about the need to maintain high moral standards, at least in schools from where the next generation is getting basic lessons. One of the staff members is now facing threat of sacking from a senior member of the School Management who alleged that this teacher was campaigning during the independence day celebrations against the honourable member.

The entire episode is now taking another angle with board members alleging that members of the rival community are trying to dominate the school management by painting the current management, especially the alleged culprits, in a bad light. It is learned that some academic staff in the school have already made it clear that on earlier occasions also some reports were submitted by one of them regarding the manner in which teacher selection interviews are conducted periodically in Indian cities.

It is a shame to the Indian community that all these controversies are happening in a school, which is supposed to be a place moulding the high moral standards of the next generation. While the academic staff and management of any schools are expected to maintain high levels of moral values and ethics, the ongoing controversy is to be seen as a clear indication about low moral standards.
