President to Give away 48th National Film Awards

Malayalam film 'Shanthan' best Feature Film Award, Anil Kapoor best actor

The President, K.R.Narayanan will present the 48th National Film Awards to the winners of different categories at a function to be held here on 12th December 2001. The quintessential Indian singer of this era, Ms. Asha Bhosle will receive the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2000. The Dada Saheb Phalke Award which was instituted in the year 1969 is given every year to a film personality for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award consists of a Swarna Kamal, a Shawl and cash prize of Rs. two lakhs.

The Best Feature Film Award for the year 2000 will be given to Malayalam Film "Shanthan". The award carries a Swarna Kamal and Rs. 50,000/- each for producer and Director of the film. Swarna Kamal and cash prize of Rs.40,000/- each for Producer and Director for ‘Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment’ will be given to Tamil film "Vanathaippola". Nargis Dutt Award for the Best Feature Film on National Integration will be presented to Hindi film "Pukar". The award carries Rajat Kamal and cash prize of Rs. 30,000/- each for producer and Director of the film. Indira Gandhi Award for the best first film of a Director will be given to Malayalam film "Sayahnam". The award for the best film on family welfare will be given to Hindi film "Kal Ka Aadmi".

The Award for the best film on other social issues such as prohibition, women and child welfare, anti-dowry, drug abuse, welfare of the handicapped etc. will be shared by two films "Vetrikkodi" (Tamil) and "Munnudi" (Kannada). The award for the best children film will be given to the film "Gharaksharanagal". The award carried a Swarna Kamal and Rs.30,000/- each to Produce and Director of the film. The Award for the best direction will be given to Rituparna Ghosh for his best Bengali film "Utsab".

Best Actor Award will be given to Anil Kapoor for his role in "Pukar" while Raveena Tondon will receive the Best Actress Award for her role in "Daman". The Award for the Best Child Artist will be given to Master Udayaraj for his role in the Tamil film "Nilaa Kalam". The award for the Best Male Playback Singer will be given to Shankar Mahadevan and Best Female Playback Singer to Bhavatharini R. The Special Jury Award will be given to Actor Soumitra Chatterjee for his role in Bengali film "Dekha".

Film Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will be presented nine National Film Awards in the non-feature film section for the year 2000. Film Division won four National awards in 1996, three in 1997 and twelve in 1998.

Popular Comedian of Malayalam Films Innocent will be in Muscat to participate in a Children's programme being organised by the Muscat based Indian Social Club, Malayalam Wing . Popular I.P.S officer, Sreelekha IPS too will be in Oman to participate in the Women's Special Programme organised by the ISC Malayalam Wing. The Rival Wing, ISC Kerala too is preparing to bring a few celebrities to Muscat as part of its Keralotsavam programme.

Muscat - As the crisis in Afghanistan is getting over the fear psychosis about conflict in the Middle East is giving way to new entertainment programmes by Malayalam film stars and TV artists. Even though certain mega entertainment programmes involving leading Malayali film stars were cancelled due to the Afghanistan war, the mega show organisers in the Gulf are back with new programmes.

About 25 leading Malayalam film and TV stars will be visiting Muscat to entertain Omani Malayalis by presenting a special comedy cum entertainement programe -Mega Comedy Dot Com on December 19-20 at the Sheraton lawn in Muscat and the Indian Social Club, Mulanda. The last programme planned by Hamad Al Jabry Establishment, organisers of Mega Comedy, was cancelled following the September 11 attack on US and the following Afghan war. Recognising the cautious public mood, all entertainment programmes have been scaled down. However, the show organisers are now jubilant and resuming new stage shows in Muscat and other Gulf countries.

The mega show organised by Hamad Al Jabry Establishment, Muscat will be lead by budding film star Nishant Sagar, who acted in the film Jocker, Malayalam heroine Jo Mol, Comedians Salim Kumar, Kottayam Nazir, Idavela Babu, Priyanka, Sajan palluruthu and others. The programme directed by film director Jose Thomas on the script of Sajan Palluruthy will be a three hour entertainer of 3 hour, said the organisers. Entry will be restricted with ticket of RO 1, RO 2 and family ticket of RO 8. Next week, the team will be performing in Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai.
