Thiruvananthapuram: The state chief minister A.K.Anthony inaugurated this year's Gandhi Jayanthi week celebrations of the Information and Public relations departments at 11.am at V.J.T Hall here. In his inaugural speech, he spoke of the importance of peace in the country and said that only if we have peace in our country, would there be peace among our neighbours too. We won't have peace even if we have power or position. How will we find peace is what we have to think on this auspicious day. The unification power that world saw has been Gandhiji." The CM also expressed his wish that may this ausipicious day of Gandhi Jayanthi give people the power to think in a good way. "We should submit this day to the purification of the self," said minister of Information and Parliamentary affairs, minister M.M.Hassan who presided over the function. "The present day Indian society is moving away from the principles of Gandhiji. We should change this trend. Those who look up for peace ought to look up to Gandhiji who has advocated the means to gain peace," Hassan said..
Education Minister shri. Nalakathu soopy inaugurated the service week and the Photo exhibition. President inaugurates second phase of Herbal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan
The President, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam planted the first sapling to inaugurate the second phase of the Herbal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Dr. Kalam planted the sapling of the Bel plant. The first phase of the Gardens was inaugurated in October last year. The second phase of the Herbal Gardens was developed under the supervision of the National Medicinal Plants Board. The garden has about 130 species of plants.
The second phase has been built to promote awareness, especially among children and farmers about herbal plants and to familiarise people about their benefits. Bio-diversity conservation and generation of a field gene bank for rare and important plants are also among the objectives of the garden. The plants have been planted in 4 rows. The outermost row has tree species, the next row has shrubs and climbers and the inner 2 rows have herbs. The garden also has 4 thematic corners containing plants used under Bal Ayurvedam, Nari Ayurvedam, Pashu Ayurvedam and Nrasksha Ayurvedam.
A special corner has been designed for the visually impaired, which contains plants that can be identified by touch and smell. The entire garden has informative aids, Braille boards and pathways with clear directions.
The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri A. Raja, the Member of the Planning Commission, Dr. D.N. Tiwari and the Secretary (Indian System of Medicine and Health) Smt. Malti Sinha along with senior officials of Rashtrapati Bhavan were present at the inauguration.President's Durga puja greetings
