THE web portal, keralamonitor.com, which has always highlighted problems faced by many labourers and not-so-well-to-do segment of expatriates in the Gulf, has gone a step further in its approach by highlighting the travails of a Malayali family, who are stranded in a nearby country after being sacked from the Indian school there. Because of the portal’s efforts, they had managed to bring some relief to the family whose plight has come to notice of many in the Gulf and India. Story so far: According to the KM report, Jerry and his wife, both teachers at the Indian School, were summarily sacked on different occasions. Jerry’s wife, an English teacher, was sacked in October 2001, while Jerry was sacked in March 2002. No reasons were given to them. They and their children are stuck in the country without any succour. Their dues were not paid to them. Now, KM reports that the harassed duo are mulling strategy to form an association of harassed, ill-treated teachers of Indian schools abroad. “We are facing a very grave problem and would like to form an association of harassed, ill-treated and tortured teachers of Indian schools (IS) abroad,” Jerry Thomas, one of the several unfortunate teachers, told KM. He noted that teachers were sometimes treated like contract workers by the school management. “The teachers, as a class, are being ill-treated all over. This should be stopped and some dignity and respect should be brought back to their lives. “If you can help us in this mission it will be a great service to the whole community of (Indian) teachers living abroad and doing a yeoman’s work for the future of our youth and the young generation,” the sacked teacher told KM.
