Endless Miseries

Dr.K.M.Seethi & Reghunathan

The controversy surrounding the perilous impact
of endosulfan on humans and animals, consequent upon the aerial
spraying in a cashew plantation in the Kasargod district of Kerala,
has set in motion a wave of protest against the pesticide use
in the state. The experience of Kerala, a state that has earned
world-wide acclaim for its health and educational standards,
and is known for its environmental consciousness, could be an
eye-opener to other states in India and elsewhere. Watch this
Spce for a comprehensive research report on the ill effects of
a deadly and toxical pesticide, which is given a stamp of approval

Trouble Shooting in the Arabian Gulf

Priyanandan team is facing serious hurdles
in shooting a film in Muscat . It seems to be a different game
in the Arabian Gulf due to poor Organizers and lack of local
talents. After one week stay in Muscat, the team could shoot
only a couple of scenes as the original script had to be changed.
Except that it is being shot in Oman, the latest script appears
to have no relavence to Non Resident Keralites life at all --notwithstanding
the wide publicity in the local media about new Telefilm on the
expatriates. Actor Srinath is in a hurry to go back as he has
accepted call sheet for some more mega pulp serials. The worst
problem is created by the poor local organizers. The team which
came without sufficient number of artists wanted to select some
local actors and actresses. At last they are satisfied with some
of the local artists. Some of them are found doing mundane jobs
like cleaning the vehicle or arranging tea to get a chance in
the film. Priyanandan is a great artist who can withstand such
hurdles, but poor organisers and bad company can make things
difficult for him. Watch this space for details.

the strict monitoring of young women being trafficked to Gulf
countries through Kerala airports, recruting agents have devised
a new route through Madras using fake emigration certificates

spot for trafficking Women to various Gulf countries through
the land route. Boarder region between Oman and UAE is a new
route for sex traffickers and recruiting agents to move young

MUSCAT -- Many expatriates have been taken for a ride by a
new gang of Arab youths who wander around in the busy streets
of Muscat, pretending to sell blue films on Compact Discs and
Video Cassettes. The gang of four to five youths, three-four
young boys of 15 to 18 year old will approach the passers by
and ask them quietly whether they are interested in buying very
good blue film CDs.Full

Rewards Government with New Grant for Power Sector Privatisation
Scheme
-
- Hardly one or two days after the Kerala Government
announced plans to hike electricity charges and the entire state
is in a turmoil caused by public agitation against the decision,
Asian Development Bank has announced a new grant to the Indian
Government for speeding up power privatisation plans. Even when
the state BJP Unit is planning a so called agitation against
the power tariff hike, the central government ruled by the corrupt
BJP leaders are negotiating further plans to privatise power
supply in the country. Thanks to the militant political culture
in the state, it has been a hard nut for the IMF-World Bank ADB
teams to crack. The latest ADB Grand is to promote Energy Service
Companies (ESCOs) -private companies that help factories and
buildings use energy more efficiently.. Watch

Air and Air India officials are in the eye of a controversy surrounding
a dubious decision by the airline to sell the entire tickets
of a special Thiruvananthapuram-Muscat flight to just one travel
agent. This decision has raised strong objection from other travel
agents and leading travel trade associations who have demanded
an investigation by the Central Buraue of Investigation into

- Sacked Indian School Science Teacher's
case moved to Higher Court from Labour Court
-
- The Labour Court judge called Indian school
authorities and asked them to submit the personal file of the
lady teacher sacked from the Indian school. During the probation
she was assessed 2 times. Both reports were good signed and agreed
both by Head of the Dept and the teacher... The main reason stated
for termination is that there is a complaint form 3 students
that they dont understand the concept in Physics If at all there
is a genuine complaint, is she liable for termination for one
complaint? she argued. One student got 80 per cent marks for
physics. There was no warning letters or any memos issued or
discussions take place till date from school authorities, she
informed the Labour Court. Now the Labour court judge has moved
the case to higher court for final decision. Hearing is yet to
take place, said sources close to the sacked teacher. Since the matter is subjudice and the Gulf country's
labour court is impartial in its judgemnts we are not reporting
further about this case. This is just
to keep our readers updated about the story, based on feedback
received from the teaching and academic community of Indian Schools
in the Gulf. We are regularly receiving a number of letters about
both the recent reports on the sacking saga.
