Observer Terminates British Editor Maurice Gent

Young Omani lady Fatma Aideed is the New Managing Editor

MUSCAT - Maurice Gent, the Managing Editor of Oman Daily Observer has been removed from the coveted post that he has been holding for the last two years. According to KM sources, the Irish man who started as a consultant to the Oman Establishment for Press News Publication and Advertisement (OEPNP), an Oman government funded autonomous body, was promoted as ME of the English daily Oman Observer, when its earlier editor Said bin Khalfan Al Harthy was promoted as chairman to head the organisation. "Maurice Gent has been divested of his duties with the Observer. He will now take charge of only the OmanMoneyWorks and other marketing supplements," said KM sources. Five month old reporter with Observer, Fatma Aideed and former correspondent with Oman TV is appointed as the new ME to oversee the Observer from June 15. Fatima is an upcoming talented Omani journalist. The sacking is said to be due to Omanisation, but the main reasons lie elsewhere.

Mr. Gent has been reportedly misusing his official powers to promote his own private interests at the cost of a public institution. The newspaper became a butt of ridicul when its managing editor wrote a front page report praising a major bank fraudster, Ayubyn Hill, former chief executive officer of National Bank of Oman. In his report, Mr.Gent termed Hill's leaving Oman as a "great loss" to the nation when the country's law enforcement authorities were trying to extradite him back to Oman for further investigatiion. The bank lost millions in bad loans due to the liberal lending policy of the former CEO.. He has also been influencing various reporters in the Observer by asking them not to raise serious questions in press conferences and sacrifice journalistic ethics for the sake of advertisement. He has been responsible for killing many stories which would have put some of the big business groups in bad light. Apparently the Chairman was upset with a lady writer friend of the ME who used to interfere in the editorial department. The lady who had no journalistic background has been dictating terms even to senior editors and sub editors. "Whenever this lady files a feature in the tabloid section, the entire editorial team had to be at her beck and call. She will come to the office at odd hours, ask the sub editor to change the page colour, picture and story layout several times before she approves the page! No newspaper in the world will ever allow such rampant interference with editorial integrity," said one of the Observer journalists . "Whenever they made a complaint to the ME , he tried to harass the subeditor instead of asking his lady friend to behave herself," added sources. Things have gone to such an extent that recently the chairman asked the lady writer to keep away from the newspaper office premises. Apparently the chairman has taken some steps to restore the lost image. When one sub editor pointed out to the ME that a promotional news item about a company was already carried in the tabloid section, he became adamant and asked him to carry it on page one! He has also been moving around five star hotels, taking freebies, free lunches and drinks. In one case, he offered a "column" in the Observer to a tennis coach of a five star hotel, in return for a discount in the tennis club!!! It is another matter that the tennis expert did not know how to write English and was negotiating with another man to pen his reports and share the remuneration!

There are also complaints that the paper has been giving undue publicity to some private companies who stopped advertising for the newspaper. Instead of advertising in the paper, they preferred to print their advertisements as "News Stories through their private channels." The paper became notorious for its advertorials instead of genuine news stories. In the process, serious journalists were either harassed or sideline. It may be recalled that V.M.Sathish, a former reporter with the Observer for five and half years was sacked mainly because the British editor was "influenced" by the big business lobby including the Khimji business family, who are currently facing major investigation. Another reason sited for terminating Mr. Gent is the government move to control growing anti western and anti British sentiment in the country. A British man occupying prominent post in the government mouthpiece is interpreted as a sacrifice of the country's soverignty and media freedom to British interests. The Britishers still call the shot in major decision making proces. The current wave of anti western violence in Saudi Arabia is an eye opener to keep such elements away from the region!

Can Americans Elect a Lady as President? Who can feel the Pulse of people in the war devastated countries?

Why didn't America select a woman as President or Vice President? To be frank many of the Americans hadn't any answer to this question. They have many women in their credit for the first position in various fields. But none came in the list of power politics. Americans are the most hated people in the World especially in the Middle East. Whether they kill thousands or they destroy a city, which has 2000 years old with Laser Bombs Americans never worried. Because Uncle Sam has told his people that they are trying hard to protect the people of America. During the war in Afghanistan and Iraq American leaders announced that they have destroyed the city's power stations and water pump houses with small bombs. They were happy in announcing that the city may be a hell for its people within hours. America needs a backlash from the city residents to the rulers of those poor countries. All American were happy to hear that the poor men in the third world country will fall soon. They don't understand till then the importance of water, electricity and hospitals...Only a lady can understand the sorrow of a mom who lost her son or daughter in a bombing Full Column

Leading Omani businessman Pradeep Khimji Under ROP Net

Pankaj Khimji, son of Kanaksi Khimji Questioned in Chedi Hotel Scandal Case

MUSCAT -The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is questioning Pradeep Khimji, close relative of the Pravasi Bharathi award winning Kanaksi Khimji family, following a complaint filed by the new management of National Bank of Oman (NBO) which has allegedly incurred multimillion losses due to bad loans. According to KM sources, Pradeep Khimji, cousine brother of former NBO Board member and business tycoon Pankaj Khimji, has been put behind bars for unsettled financial liabilities to the NBO, currently under the management of Suhail Bahwan group. It is understood that the default case is filed by the new bank management. It may be recalled that the Khimji family had a predominant share in the bank, which was sold under the supervision of the Central Bank of Oman. Pankaj Khimji, a long time board member of NBO has taken "voluntary" retirement from the bank. It has come to public notice that the Khimji family has been closely monitored by the law enforcement authorities in Oman especially after the shareholders of some public companies lodged complaints against fund diversion and mismanagement.

Recap:Aubyn Hill, the former high profile Chief Executive of NBO who was partially responsible for the huge bad loan liability had absconded from Oman. Hill was brought to work as NBO CEO from a Towell group trading company in Kuwait.

They were also allegedly misusing soft loans given at concessional interest rate to promote local industry from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Last year KM reported that the family members were interrogated . Pradeep Khimji's company Desert Palm was last year black listed by the Indian Ambassador in Muscat Talmiz Ahmed for non payment of salary to workers. The family had the full support of the BJP Led Central Government in New Delhi. However, the political changes in India may make things difficult for them to get out of the case Will the new Government in India come forward to rescue the Khimjis or withdraw the prestigious award, which is supposed to be given to Non Resident Indians with integrity. The move is part of the reviving strategy of the onces popular bank. The new management seems to be determined to revive NBO, a major bank with good brand reputation. The success of the campaign depends on how much of the outstanding bad loans could be retrived from the near and dear ones of former board members and senior executives. Watch this space.

NRK Construction Tycoon preparing to leave Oman for better, brother Absconding?

Another leading Non Resident Keralite Businessman is said to be preparing to leave Oman before things go out of control. According to KM Sources, the brother of a high profile NRK Businessman from Kerala doing construction business in Oman has been allegedly missing or absconding. The construction group is reportedly owing huge amount of loan liabilities to the NBO and other financial institutions in Oman. The company has been notorious for non payment of salary to workers. KM Special Reports Investigations

If anybody is to be blamed for NBO's problems it has to the Khimji family and the W J Tower Family..

Extracts from Arabies Trends about NBO.

MUSCAT - Quoting highly placed sources within NBO, Arabies Trends said the NBO is currently sitting on bad loans in excess of $400 million, for which provisions have yet to be made. Chances of any substantial recovery on these loans, according to the sources, are extremely low. "Wiping this slate clean could take at least three years. Bad loans are the major factor behind NBOs dismal returns in 2003, when it recorded a whopping loss of 51.8 million Rials., making it one of the worst performers among Middle Eastern financial institutions last year. Senior management does not seem to have any solutions to the problems ailing the bank, said a leading shareholder in NBO. For the new CEO John Finigan, the new few months will be crucial," the report says. " There have been rumours that Finigan will not be able to deliver the desired results, and that it would be best to find a replacement. The wrong person is getting the blame," it said quoting regional banking analysts. “If anyone has to be blamed it has to be NBO’s senior shareholders, such as the Khimji group and W J Towell Group,” said one Muscat based analyst. “In the second half of the 1990s, when then CEO Aubyn Hill was raising NBO exposure across the region, they did not utter a word because the returns were quite good. It is only when these loans turned bad, and Hill absconded in 2001 that these shareholders woke up. The problems at NBO are entirely their doing,” the report said.

Largest NBO shareholders responsible for $400 million "very bad loans" : Arabies Trends Report

MUSCAT - A leading international magazine has said in a detailed report on the National Bank of Oman (NBO) that its problems are caused mainly by the two leading business families in Oman that control the bank. The well reputed business magazine, Arabies Trends from Paris has said in a report that many middle level NBO managers are leaving the bank to new financial centers in Dubai and Bahrain because they firmly believe that about $400 million bad loans in its portfolio are not recoverable. The report specifically mentions the Khimji Ramdas family and the Towell group as responsible for the banks' bad loan problems. The importance of the second family can be gauged from the fact that Oman's Minister of Commerce and Industry Maqbool Ali Sultan is a Towell Family member. It may be noted that the former Chief Exeuctive Officer was recruited from one of the family businesses in another Gulf country to head the bank. While the local journalists in Oman always write goody goody reports about NBO and its former Chief Executive officer Ayubin Hill, the Arabies Trends reporter had a uncomfortable interview with the bank Chief Executive, who abruptly ended the meeting without answering serious questions raised by the magazine Read the latest issue of Arabies Trends and see the trend in Oman's banking sector.--Watch this space.
