GUJARAT EARTHQUAKE : BULLETIN ON RELIEF ARRANGEMENTS BY INDIAN RAILWAYS

  1. The earthquake that occurred on 26.01.2001 has caused severe devastation in Gujarat. The track on Viramgam – Gandhidham BG section, Navlakhi – Dahinsara BG section and Palanpur – Gandhidham MG section has suffered extensive damage. Communication has been disrupted on these sections. There have been damages to Railway station buildings (100), bridges(36),cabins(15) and staff quarters(350). Railways have launched relief operations on a war footing.

    Restoration efforts are being affected by reports of fresh tremors of lesser intensity occurring in the area.On the Viramgam – Gandhidham BG route, the line has been certified upto Samakhiali and Control communication is available upto Samakhiali. There is no DOT communication with Gandhidham. Train service is up to Maliya Miyana Jn. only.The broad guage line upto Gandhidham has been restored for rail trafficat 13 hrs today.

    On the Palanpur – Gandhidham MG section, the line has been certified upto Kidiyanagar and Control communication is available up to Kidiyanagar. Train service is up to Radhanpur only. CE/HQs has reported that the track between Navlakhi and Dahinsara is sunk by 1 to 3 metreDRM/ BRC with branch officers, CE/works, CEE/WR, CBE/WR are at site along with other engineers are engaged in the activity of restoration.

  2. Special Trains:

The following special trains have been operated for carrying relatives of quake victims and NGOs free of cost. Trains have also been operated to clear victims and their families from the affected areas. Wide publicity has been given through press and media about the running of special trains.

One Military special containing 11 coaches left Ambala 1840 hours (27.01.2001) for Ahmedabad carrying tentage. This train will carry quake affected armed forces families back to JRC on NR. The train reached Ahmedabad at 0200 hrs on 29.01.2001.

In return direction a special train has been ordered at 23.00 Hrs on date from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.A special train has also been ordered from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on date at 1700 hrs

  2. Medical Relief trains:

Three Medical relief trains were run from Ahmedabad, Udna and Palanpur with a team of doctors and medical equipment.

Ahmedabad to Dharangadra

Movement of materials and men:

      • Bull-dozer special (A-class ODC) consisting of 4 BRH(flat wagons) loads with dozers left Bhilai at 0315 hours on 28.01.2001. Passed Bhusawal 1130 hrs. on date.
      • One rake of GI Strips was on the point of departure ( TE on) with 8 BOX + 5 BRH. This train will pickup 11 BOX loaded from Tumsar Road. The train passed Bhusawal 1355 hrs. on date.
      • First labour special of 225 men reached Maliya at 1340 hours on 27.01.2001.
      • One water special left Ahmedabad at 0500 hrs on date for Ghandhi Dham andd Nalia.
      • One water special under loading at Sabarmati for Nalia and Ghandhi Dham.
      • Two Ballast special reached Indiranagar on 28.1.2001
      • 4 buses of labour 124 men sent from Palanpur
      • Relief material consisting of 700kg atta, 500 kg Potatoes, 200kg Onion, 200 blankets, 1000 water pouches sent by truck ex-Ahmedabad at 1235 on 27.01.2001. One water tanker moved by 111 Passenger.
      • Relief material consisting of 70 blankets, 80 kg Potatoes, Onions, Atta, Cooking oil tents etc. sent by truck ex-Abu Road on 27.01.2001.
      • One team of Doctors under supervision of CMS/Ajmer left for site (between Samakhiali and Gandhidham by road)
      • A material train ex-Palanpur with 600 cribs and 100 sleepers and all engineering relief material reached Adheser at 10.3 hrs on 28.01.2001
