Sruthi R. Bhadran bags Eight
first prizes
Indian Social Club Malayalam Wing Members Dominate
Winners List
Vijana Rani Vasudevan
Sruthi R.Bhadran has proved beyond doubt that she has been
the star performer in the Keralolsavam 2002 organised by the
Indian Social Club Kerala Wing in Muscat. When most of the results
came in, Sruthi got first prize in eight items. Except one item
out of 9 events in which she participated, Sruthi bagged first
prize in 8, which is a record of sort here. She got first prize
in junior folk dance (Group), Folk dance (Single), Fancy Dress,
Malayalam Recitation and Nadaka Ganangal (Drama Songs).
Earlier she got first prize in Mohiniyattam, Koochippudi and
Bharatanatyam. According to most of the judges, who are experts
in their respective fields brought to Muscat from the UAE, she
is a promising artist whose talents need to be nourished in all
possible manner. It wont be a surprise if the organisers give
her any special awards in recognition of her excellent performance.
Another aspect of her victory is that Sruthi and a number of
other winners in various events are members of the Indian Social
Club, Malayalam wing. Everybody in Muscat knows that the two
lingustic wings of ISC -Malayalam and Kerala - have been competing
with each other to attract the Malayali community to their fold.
A cursory glance through the winners list shows that most
of the star performers are from the ISC Malayalam Wing. Despite
unhealthy politicking and rivalry between the two wings, Vijana
Ranee, Risha Raveendran, Anjali Sebastian, Mohan Kalarickal,
Sruthi Muraleedharan, Suresh, Deepu, Sunil John, Vijana Viswanath,
Aishwarya Surendran and Radhee Raveendran who got various prizes
are all from the ISC Malayalam Wing. This also indicates that
the judges have been fair and the organisers need to be appreciated
for their efforts to ensure transparency. Despite some teething
troubles, including the alleged misbehaviour of some of the volunteers,
with some visitors, the three day event was a peaceful exercise.
Even though some of the dance and music teachers tried to
interfere, everything was fully under control. Now every body
is keen to know whether the fund raising plan of the ISC Kerala
Wing for humanitarian purposes will materialise and the management
committee will fulfil the promise made to the members that the
revenue from Keralolsavam 2002 would be utilised for humanitarian
purposes. It may be noted that in the first year of operation,
the ISC Kerala Wing, which started with a promise to focus on
humanitarian issues, devoted just RO 100 out of a RO 10,000 budget
for humanitarian projects. With due respect to all the concrete
contributions made by the ISC Kerala Wing as well as the ISC
Malayalam Wing, the current situation facing the average Gulf
Malayali in Muscat and interior warrants more from them on the
humanitarian front.
