Kerala Engineering Entrance Test goes Online for Gulf Students
Online entrance test will be introduced for the candidates outside India who are seeking admission to engineering courses in Kerala. The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-Dat) has developed an interactive website for the purpose. The project would be jointly implemented by the C-Dat and the Higher Education Department in Kerala with the aid of Indian Embassies abroad.
It has been a long standing demnad of the Gulf Indians to start entrance test centres in the Gulf countries. According to the new scheme, the marks obtained by each candidate would be made available within a few seconds after completing the examination. Admission to the reserve quota for Non Resident Indian students would be filled on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates.
The Central Government is going ahead with its plan to privatise Cochin Shipyard and Hindustan Shipyard. Cochin Shipyard made a profit of Rs.38.49 crores during the year 2000-2001 and paid a dividend of Rs.7.5 crores by way of sales tax, customs duty, excise duty and income tax. This is part of the Central Government policy to sell off even profit making public sector units to private individuals and business groups close to the ruling party. The state Government and the employees have expressed their reservations about privatising Cochin Shipyard, which has earned billions of rupees profit during the last several years. The Joint Action Council of CSL trade unions have submitted a memorandum, urging the Union Minister of Shipping Ved Prakash Goyal to reconsider the move to privatise a profit making unit in the State.
Air India flight to Hajj was delayed, causing several pilgrims to be held up at the Nedumbassery International Airport. The flight was scheduled to take off from Kochi at 0720 hours, the IA Aircraft which was held up at New Delhi reached Kochi only in the night. About 382 pasengers who were going to Mecca in private groups left Kochi around 10100 hours.

The Kerala Government is studying the cases of illegal Pakistani nationals who have been overstaying in the state beyond their visa period for deportation, said state Chief Minister A.K.Antony. the central government has urged the state to identify and deport illegal Pakistanis.
