Air India likely to restore all services by May 8: Hussain
New Delhi,Friday, May 02, 2003: With more pilots reporting for duty after their agitation was called off last night, Air India is likely to fully restore its services by May eight. While five flights were restored on April 30, 14 more would be resumed by Sunday, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain said.
The 14 flights to be restored comprise eight of A-310s, four of Boeing 747-400s and two of B 747-200s. "We expect that all flights would be fully restored by May eight," he said. Asked whether the walk-in interviews for trained pilots advertised in the wake of the strike would continue, Hussain said the process was on "but no final decision has been taken as yet". He said he was happy that the agitation had ended and the pilots were returning to work. "I sympathise with them. They have contributed to the growth and reputation of Air India, but the latest action of the Indian Pilots Guild has brought a loss of name to the organisation", he said. The Minister also welcomed the order of the Mumbai High Court which directed that pilots should be permitted to join after individually putting in written representations as to why they did not report for work. It also asked the management to permit them to join depending upon the exigencies of work.
A-I tough stance continues, pilots have to give undertaking
Mumbai,Friday, May 02, 2003: Continuing with its tough stance, Air-India management today said disciplinary action would be taken against the 46 suspended pilots and members of derecognised Indian Pilots Guild would have to submit a written undertaking before 5 pm tomorrow on flying duties.
"All these pilots will have to give us an undertaking that they will take the assigned flights and undertake training for CAT III when deputed for which no compensation will be paid", A-I's public relations director told newspersons here.Asked about the 27 suspended pilots, Bhargava said as per the court order today all of them "will have to put in written representations individually explaining as to why they did not report for duty and the management will permit them to join depending upon the exigencies of the work".  Asked whether the pilots would be rostered for flights, Bhargava said "at the moment the requirement is less since we have curtailed flights to the Far East, including Hong Kong and Singapore". at the moment with a curtailed schedule "we see an excess of pilots", he said. Bhargava said IPG today wrote a letter to the management that "in national interest the managing committee was withdrawing all its directions and agree to resume flight duties immediately".
"We had asked for this on April 26, when the Civil Aviation Secretary K Roy Paul, who is also the chairman, met IPG leaders and they should have agreed instead of causing financial loss to the airline", he said.
