MUSCAT - The Omani police have arrested a gang of four Omanis who have been engaged in armed robbery. The gang was arrested from the wilayat of Shinas on armed robbery charges, said Royal Oman Police in a statement. The members of the gang have been identified as Hilal bin Nasser bin Mohammed (31 years) Saeed bin Salim bin Saeed (35 years), Juma bin Masoud bin Saeed (24 years), Sulaiman bin Mohammed bin Malik (32 years) and Ali bin Saleh bin Rashid (25 years). The gang was involved in robbering the car belonging to the Oman UAE exchange Centre, a money exchange house. The Oman UAE Exchange car which was coming from the United Arab Emirates with currencies worth RO500,000, was intercepted near Al Aqr roundabout in Shinas by the gang which arrived at the spot in another car.
The gang of Arabs opened fire at the company car and made off with the money kept in the boot. Nobody was injured in the shootout. The anti-crime squad at the Directorate-General of Criminal Investigation played a key role in tracking down the suspects, who were arrested within 24 hours of committing the crime. The cars and the weapons involved in the robbey were confiscated. The suspects confessed to their crime during interrogation. They would be referred to Public Prosecution.Such large scale looting crimes have been rare in Oman. A few years back, the Purushottam Kanji Exchange was attacked and looted, but the culprits were arrested by the police. Similarly a gang of four Malayalis were involved in looting 20 kg of gold, which was illegally transported for smuggling purpose by another gang. The smugglers bought 20 kg from a Gujarathi businessmen for smuggling to India. However, one Malayali who was knowing the gold movement, came with three others wearing Omani dress, attacked the smugglers and looted the gold from Mattrah area. Four of them divided the gold among themselves and left Oman. However, one of them who was running a hotel here came back. He was arrested by the police and fined huge amount. However, those who left the Sultanate were not caught.
Five Pedestrian Crossing Bridges in Muscat t within Six Months

MUSCAT - Muscat Municipality will construct five pedestrian flyovers for five key pedestrian accident-prone areas in Muscat and tenders for these bridges would be announced this month. Lack of pedestrian crossing at some spots in the highways have caused a number of accidents involving pedestrians, especially expatriates. The new bridges would facilitate easy crossing of the road swiftly and safely. According to a recent traffic study, some of the hot spots had major pedestrian accident-prone areas. The new pedestrian crossing bridges would be built in these areas. The five spots are located in Sultan Qaboos and Al Seeb streets, which will be developed in the first stage. The airport roundabout has been a spot of regular accidents involving pedestrian crossings.
Other spots are in Al Hail, near Sayyid Hamad mosque; in Azaiba (near Zubair Automotive) Al Ghubrah, (near Al Maha filling station), Al Khuwair (near the Ministry of Health), and in Madinat Sultan Qaboos (opposite Shell/Sarooj filling station). Readymade steel bridges would be fixed in these spots. The project would be completed within six months from the beginning of the operations, said a senior Muncipal officer.
