FEASIBILITY STUDY ON MISSION TO MOON

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has taken up a feasibility study for undertaking an unmanned – mission to the moon. The trip to moon will be entirely based on the conclusions of the study. The proposed experiments cover the chemistry of the moon, using x-ray spectroscopy, gamma-ray spectroscopy besides imaging the lunar surface.

India is embarking on the programme in the backdrop of self-reliance achieved in the design, development and commissioning of INSAT communication satellites as well as launch vehicles and rockets. Our space based information and communication networks comprise space segment (communication satellites) and associated ground segment. India only imports some electronic components especially from the United States for its space programme. The design, development, fabrication, assembly, integration and testing of all the satellites are indigenously carried out. Several other systems such as power, communications, control structures and payloads are also being indigenised gradually.

It may be noted that India has acquired expertise in producing launch vehicles both GSLV and PSLV. In October last, India put into orbit a Technology Experiment Satellite (TES) as well as two small satellites of other countries. With this successful multiple launch experiment, the Government has approved a long-range plan for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle continuation programme.
