Health Monitor Chronic diseases are the
biggest killer of adults
The report also highlights the spread
in developing countries of epidemics of heart disease,
stroke and other chronic diseases, which in addition to
communicable diseases create a "double burden"
of premature death and ill-health. The report proposes
a "double response" to this burden by integrating
prevention and control of both communicable and noncommunicable
diseases within a comprehensive health care system. Of
the 45 million deaths among adults worldwide in 2002,
almost three-quarters were caused by communicable diseases.
These are the main cause of death in all regions, except
Africa where HIV/AIDS has become the leading cause of
mortality among adults aged 15-59 years. In this age group,
the leading killers in 2002 were: Respiratory infections,
1.9 million deaths Diarrhoeal disease, 1.6 million deaths
Malaria, 1.1 million deaths. Neglect of health systems
has international consequences

OBESITY - THE NEW EPIDEMIC
Dinesh C Sharma*

It is not a disease, yet it results in
many complicated conditions in the human body. It develops
over a period of time, yet people tend to ignore it. There
are no magic cures for it, yet this has helped spin a
fast growing industry for its cure in many countries.
Governments don't keep a count of it, yet it has been
described as an epidemic. Yes. The answer to this puzzle
is obesity. More

Briton, named Ronald Ross (1857-1932) designated August
20th as "Mosquito Day" to commemorate his victory
over the mosquito mystery. The war waged by Ross against
malaria still continues as it is as elusive as ever in
spite of the persistent efforts to combat it. Malaria
still remains one of the devastating public health menaces
in the world killing more than one million people every
year. It causes about 30-500 million infections worldwide
and the children are the major victims. More
