Akshaya -Full Computer Literacy in Kerala

Kochi - In the Malappuram district of Kerala, information technology (IT) has become a way of life for the common people. What is surprising is that they are neither highly educated nor English-speaking category. Some of them are not even formally educated. Another section of the neo-computer literate of Malappuram has already crossed 60 years of age. A small minority is even older than 70. Malappuram is making history in IT education through the Akshaya project. It is a model not only for India but also for all developing countries. A district considered backward is now coming forward to emerge on top of computer literacy. Chamravattom in the district became the first village to achieve a 100 per cent computer literacy by August 2003. Other villages are emulating it. It is expected that the entire district will attain cent per cent computer literacy level by the end of January 2004. More

December 24, 2003 More than 12 per cent of Internet users in the GCC are using broadband access, with Kuwait leading the way with 29 per cent broadband Internet penetration, followed by Bahrain at 22.59 per cent, Qatar at 19.4 per cent and the UAE at 16.6 per cent. Broadband Internet connection is an "always on" connection that offers speeds of over 64 Kilo Bytes per second (kbps) compared to narrow band's 56 Kbps. The high speed connections that include ISDN Local Area Network (LAN), Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) and connectivity via satellite are poised to register further growth in the Middle East, driven by recreational and professional applications such as video streaming, network gaming and IP telephony.
