Jawad Al-Redha, Co-Chairman, Business Software Alliance (BSA) Middle East with the Omani software dealers.

MUSCAT -Business Software Alliance, the organisation that represents the
interests of global software developers, recently honoured software dealers in
Oman for showing strong commitment to combating software piracy by signing
the Code of Ethics drafted by BSA to protect copyrighted software.

At a ceremony hosted by BSA in Muscat recently, 16 dealers were
presented with certificates by Jawad Al Redha, Co-chairman, BSA Middle East for
signing the code. The Code of Ethics lays down that the signatories would
'neither commit or tolerate the manufacture or use of distribution of unlicensed
software' and 'would only supply licensed software to customers.'

"The Code of Ethics represents yet another significant step in the
fight against software piracy in the Middle East region," said Al Redha. "The
enthusiasm shown by the Omani dealers is proof that dealers have
realised the benefits of supplying licensed software and are ready to join the
battle against piracy. The signing of the Code of Ethics represents an
undertaking from the signatory that his company fully understands the manufacture,
use or distribution of unlicensed copies of copyrighted software
amounts to violation of law. It also enjoins on the company to enforce controls
within the organisation to ensure compliance with this code."

"The Code of Ethics developed by Business Software Associates
complements other ongoing initiatives that will jointly contribute to reduce
software piracy in the region. The Copyright Law passed in many Middle East
countries, and backed by government-supported raids against software pirates, has
been a milestone achievement for BSA. We feel the Code of Ethics is a
powerful manifestation of the dealers' commitment to intellectual property laws,
because it is a voluntary step by each signatory. We are positive that
many more dealers will sign the Code of Ethics in the near future," Al
Redha added.

Over the past few years, software piracy has shown a sizable drop in
most countries of the region, according to a recent BSA study. Spurred by
the success, BSA has stepped up its anti-piracy activities, of which the
Code of Ethics is the newest.

"BSA has accelerated the anti-piracy momentum not only to protect the
rights of global and regional software developers but also to create a healthy
environment for the growth of the IT industry, that would ultimately
boost the national economies," added Al Redha. "Further, it will protect
computers from the harm that unlicensed software products cause to systems.
Ultimately, the elimination of software piracy is in the interest of all parties
concerned, including the end users and dealers."

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is an international organization
representing leading software and e-commerce developers in 65 countries around the
world. Established in 1988, BSA has offices in the United States, Europe and
Asia. As the voice of the software industry, BSA helps governments and
consumers understand how software strengthens the economy, worker productivity
and global development and how its further expansion hinges on the
successful fight against software piracy and Internet theft. BSA's efforts include
educating computer users about software copyrights; advocating public
policy that fosters innovation and expands trade opportunities; and fighting
software piracy.

Birla sun life insurance focusses on its "Medicare" plans Choose from two plans; one with Return of Premium and the other without

October 29 , 2003, Mumbai: An increasing pace of life and high level of stress are the major factors affecting health today. The huge medical bills can be a major drain on resources in the event of any critical illness especially if the earning member of the family were to be affected.

Keeping these factors in mind, Birla Sun Life Insurance has launched ?Birla Sun Life Medicare? Plans, which combine the security of life insurance with health related protection. Both plans are very affordable. While commenting on the Medicare plan, BSLI CEO Mr. Nani Javeri said: ?At Birla Sun Life Insurance, we understand how important it is for you and your loved ones to have the security of a Life Insurance plan coupled with Critical Illness protection. This is exactly why we are launching a highly affordable Life Insurance plan with health related protection.?

There are two plan options available as under:
Option 1: The first option is a combination of a Term Plan and the Critical Illness benefit and it works as follows:

If the life insured is to suffer from any of the critical illnesses as covered under the plan, then the entire face amount of the Critical Illness benefit becomes payable to him/her. The base term plan continues till its maturity which means that in the unfortunate event of the policyholder?s death during the tenure of the plan, the face amount of the term plan is payable additionally to the nominee.
Event

Benefits
In case of Critical Illness
Face Amount of the Critical Illness Rider
On Death
Face Amount of the Term Plan
On Maturity

This plan is available in two terms 20 years and 25 years. The 20-year plan is available to individuals between the ages of 25 and 45 years while the 25-year plan is available to individuals between the ages of 25 and 40 years. It is a highly affordable plan as illustrated below.

Example: Let us suppose a 25-year-old male purchases the base plan for a Face Amount of Rs.5,00,000 along with the Critical Illness Rider (optional) for a Face Amount of Rs. 5,00,000 and the Waiver of Premium Rider (optional). The annual premium payable for a 20-year term is only Rs.3653/-

Option 2: The second option also works similarly where the Critical Illness benefit is paid if the life insured were to suffer from any of the Critical Illnesses. The difference in this option is that the premium that the customer pays on the base term plan is paid back in addition to the face amount in case of death. At maturity 100% of the premiums paid by the policyholder are paid back to him. The benefits of the plan can be tabulated as under:
Event

The benefit periods available under the Premium Back plan are 15 and 20 years. Both the benefit period options are available to individuals between the ages of 25 and 45 years.
