The artist within Police Uniform exhibits Paintings, Poems
Crime Branch D.I.G. B.Sandhya presented her first exhibition of paintingsBy R.S.Priya
Thiruvananthapuram: Crime Branch D.I.G. B.Sandhya IPS conducted a two-day exhibition of her paintings on 16th and 17th of December. In her maiden art exhibition, the IPS lady presented most of the paintings that she made in the last 7 years. On the auspicious occasion of her first painting exhibition which was well received by the general public, the lady cop has also released her new collection of poems entitled 'Neermaruthile Uppan'. The tough lady police officer with an artistic paint brush on one hand and pen on the other hand has a good flair for writing. Amidst tight time table of an IPS officer, Sandhya is a mom and wife who managed to find some time to nurture her artistic talents.
She has already published four books before 'Neermaruthile Uppan'. Her other Malayalam books are 'Thaarattu', 'Raanthal Vilakku', Baalavaadi and 'Sthreeshakti'. It is surprising the lady police official has so much of hidden artistic talents. This is not the first time that the talented lady was in the news. She was a rank holder for M.Sc Zoology from Paalai Alphonse College. As the title of her book reveals, Sandhya represents the true manifestation of Streeshakthi, read women power. In a fully literate state where womanhood has been humiliated by sex rackets and corrupt politicians, demonstration of their skills by such talented educated women indicates that there are still some rays of hope prevailing there.
Hailing from Palai near Kottayam, Sandya studied at the Alappuzha St.Antony's Girls High School and Bharanangaanam Sacred Hearts Girls High School. Following her studies, she worked for two years as project officer in Matsyafed. It was in 1988 that she entered the much coveted Indian Police Service (IPS) with her first posting was as A.S.P (Trainee), Kannur. Subsequently she became Kannur Crime Branch Superintendent after working at Shornoor and Alathoor. She was the District Police Head of Kollam and Thrissur before promoting as A.I.G, Police Headquarters. Later she was given charge as the Crime Branch D.I.G. She is well trained in human resources management from Wollongong University, Australia and did P.G.D.B.A from the Pondicherry Central University.
Married to Madhukumar, Physics lecturer, M.G.College her daughter Hyma is a 6th standard student.Being a sincere IPS officer, she had just two days to prepare for her first art exhibition. Responding to KM queries about the reason for conducting an exhibition in such a hurry, Sandhya said she doesn't have much time to spare for an art exhibition and is supposed to resume duty the next day. "I don't have many days to spare for the exhibition as I would have to return to my duty soon. It's a great responsibility and one cannot move away from it,' she said Around 50 paintings were exhibited and most of her works focused on man's relation to nature and the evolution of the world. She does both watercolour and oil paintings. Her paintings had a kind of simplicity in them, which brings us close to the nature around us. Many of her paintings were those of various varieties of plants. Many eminent personalities like V.Madhusoodanan Nair attended the paintings exhibition.
Her collection of poems Neermaruthile Uppan is an expression of the independent attitude of the hidden poet in her, which is not tied to any school of poetry. Her poems express her sadness in the loss ideological values of human culture. The poems are eye openers to the threats that this kind of loss raises to the humanity as well as to the nature around. Her poems have a touch of genuineness in them and her paintings also bring out the genuine feelings that she portrayed as a poet. Even though Sandhya, a duty bound police officer faces harsh reality in her official life, a sensitive poet and artist within her brings out her true self, which is hidden within.
