Thiruvananthapuram September 20: Utham Raj a seventh standard student of St.Joseph's High School has proven himself a little master in the art of painting. An exhibition of his paintings sponsored by Kannan Devan Tea is being held at Museum Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram from 20th of September to 23rd. Utham, the younger son of Unnikrishnan and Raji. Though presently Utham and his family are settled in Thiruvananthapuram, they hail from Tripunithura.His father Unnikrishnan working in the Press Trust of India (PTI), is his greatest inspiration to make some progress in life to develop his talents as a painter. Utham has participated and won several prizes at the district and state level competitions like the All Kerala Painting Competition and Rajiv Gandhi Memorial gold medal. He has also been a regular participant of every year for youth festival in painting competitions. He started drawing cartoons and painting from a very young age. The current exhibition shows his paintings and cartoons from the nursery days to present times. He has drawn cartoon portraits of famous artists and political personalities like film Prem Nazir, Achyuthanandan, Sonia Gandhi, A.K.Anthony, Karunakaran, Umman Chandy, Bichu Thirumala, and Mahatma Gandhi. His cartoons are mainly based on the present political issues in Kerala. He does watercolouring and oil paintings. Due to heavy burden of homework and school projects, he is not able to spend much time for drawing, says his mother Raji. His ambition in life is to take up painting as a career. He occasionally browses the Internet with the help of his brother Uday Raj, studying for plus-two. -Keralamonitor.com.
