Literary Adventures of S.A.Qudsi
from the Arabian Desserts
Abu Dhabi: S.A.Qudsi ---Sayyid Abubacker Qudsi- is a familiar
name for ordinary Malayalam readers because his name keep appearing
in the literary section of dailies and other publications. Qudsi,
a versatile writer of short stories and free styled translations
of Arabian & Persian short stories lives in Abu Dhabi, the
capital of United Arab Emirates.
Even though he has been busy with his official assignments
for Abu Dhabi Investment Authority since 1979, unlike most of
the ordinary Gulf Malayalis, Qudsi finds sufficient time to write
his regular columns or engage in socio-cultural activities. Even
at the age of 51 years, Qudsi is very actively pursuing his literary
endeavours and trying to encourage budding writers from the Gulf
region through a unique 'writers club' with the support of like
minded people in the UAE.
He remembers the day when his first published literary work
-- a Malayalam Radio play called Sultante Makal (Sultan's Daughter),
was broadcasted by All India Radio,Calicut. During those days
when the current Television revolution was yet to take off, Qudsi
was thrilled to see All India Radio broadcasting his maiden literary
work. Thanks to his continued dedication and hard work, Qudsi
has won state level Manaveeyam-2000 Literary Award for a single
Short story, Padappaka (War Revenge), from Kerala Social Center,
Abu Dhabi. Qudsi is the proud author of two Malayalam books:
Jinn (collection of Arabian folk tales) and Mrithyu Rekha (Death
line), (collection of two Radio plays)
.
His most recent works include: " Itha Oru Sahitya Silpasala,
free styled translation of Creative Writing- A Practical guide,
written by Julia Casterton, London, is laying with his publisher,
Mulberry Publishing,Calicut, waiting for printing. It is a complete
and useful practical guide to budding writers. Arabi Muthu,-
Pappiyon Publications, Calicut has agreed to publish this book
of Arabian folk tales). His own collection of his short stories,
free styled translations of Ghalil Gibran stories, Arabian Short
stories, Persian Short stories and baby names are awaiting publishers
to take over the publishing job.
Besides working in the UAE for two decades, Qudsi has his
ancestral links to the Middle East region. He was born in Koilandy,
a village in Calicut, Kerala,India,on June 15,1950. His parents
settled in Calicut city in his early childhood. He is the second
son of late Sayyid Abdulla Qudsi Thangal & Cheriyabi alias
Mariyam. He is a grand son of Mohammed Qudsi, a Palestinian Jewel
merchant, who had moved from a riot effected area of Quds, a
city in Palestine, where historical Al-Aqsa Mosque is located.
Qudis got his basic education from M.M.(Madrassathul Muhammadiya
High School,Parappil,Calicut. after which joined in P.S.M.O.College,Thirurangadi,
Malappuram District,Kerala, for his college studies. Qudsi lives
with wife Shameema and Shama and Lulu, daughters. Qudsi has been
an active member of the Kerala Social Center, which is one of
the unique socio-cultural organisations in the Gulf focusing
on the humanitarian and progressive aspects of Gulf Malayalis
social life.
