Malayali Family’s Problems Worsened as Nirmala Tightens grip
KM correspondent
Target is to lure the Young Beautiful girl of the family in distress
MUSCAT – April 28, 2004 When George Thomas who has worked in Abu Dhabi for 25 years lost his job, his only daughter was an 11 th class student there. When a distant relative in Muscat came forward with a helping hand, offering job and chance for continuing her education in Oman, George did not think twice to lend her 50,000 Dhms. In return the lady, Nirmala (full name withdrawn), the second wife of a distant relative, lured them to Muscat offering just three visit visas. The girl was admitted to the Indian School Muscat, using her high level influence. (How it happened? ISM needs to give an explanation)?
The family was accommodated in a small house near Darsait Indian school and the man was not allowed to go out for one and half years!, alleged George and family. Being illegal expatriates living without valid visa, they could be nabbed by the police any time, Nirmala allegedly threatened them frequently. She was allegedly demanding more money and got a cheque worth Rs.3 lakh from the family. The family alleged that Nirmala has been regularly harassing them for the last one and half years, demanding more money and trying to lure the mature and beautiful girl into immoral activities. Being a diabetic patient, George had several injuries on his palm. When the family had no other means of survival, some well wishers who were informed about their pathetic situation by the school girl, came forward with helping hand. His fingers were removed and doctors advised his immediate transfer to India for better treatment.
Nirmala is allegedly holding their passport and the three have to pay huge amount as fine for overstaying. Meanwhile his passport too expired! They could not pay monthly rent. The family has been seeking Nirmala’s help to send them back to Kerala, but she did not help. Said to be a very influential lady running a manpower company with “high level connections” due to unknown reasons, the lady is threatening everyone who is coming forward to help the family in distress. Some good samiritans have offered help to get the man treated and part of his leg has been amputed at the Badr Al Samaa Polyclinic. While he was in hospital, the mother and daughter are repatriated to some other safe locations to avoid further harassment from Nirmala. She has threatened to take the girl by force with the help of Baluchis, if the mother and daughter are not brought back to their “original home”. Some people are engaged in a hide and seek game to protect the girl and her mother.
The family members alleged that the main target is the beautiful young girl in the family. (Expect a detailed report on sex trafficking and sex racket in Oman). At least RO 1500 is required to repatriate the three member family to Kerala. It is alleged that the lady has been demanding more money from George and the problems started when he refused to pay. “Her target is the grown up daughter in the family. She has shown more interest in the family matters after visiting their Abu Dhabi home and seeing the girl. She tried several times to take the girl alone, but the careful interference of her mother prevented her from doing so,” the mother told KM sources. Meanwhile Nirmala has forcefully taken the signature of George from hospital bed on some papers, on the pretext that she has to reply to KM reports about the alleged harassment case. While we could not contact Nirmala directly for her views, the story will be persuaded further giving her version.
The champions of freedom, human rights and democracy in Muscat are scared of reporting the whole story because of her high level influence and contact with big policemen and industrialists. Any thing is possible in Oman , if you can give woman and wine! Big sharks may be eagerly awaiting the right moment to taste the young girls flesh? The Indian Embassy, which is supposed to be protecting the overseas Indian community, too is watching from the sidelines. As usual the local media too is silent. Asianet reporter is keenly waiting for the green signal from the Parish head –anyway reporting the event will not serve any purpose! Well, how many families have been cheated in this fashion in Muscat ? People say many families have been trapped by the sex trafficking racket in this fashion. Manpower and Woman Power consultants continue to thrive and George remains helpless, with one leg amputed at the Badr Al Samaa Polyclinic. Anyone is listening? Keep Watching this space for the follow up story. George is now in safe custody of Badr Al Samaa Polyclinic (keralamonitor.com)

UAE is the 6 th largest exporter of dates in the world
Emirates Environment Group’s 4 th General Meeting highlights anti-desertification potential of Date Palm cultivation
DUBAI April 28, 2004 According to a report on Date Palm Cultivation by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, UAE is the 6 th largest exporter of dates to the global markets. The country is also the single largest gross exporter of dates to the global markets, with a 37 per cent market share. These facts, as well as the anti-desertification potential of Date Palm Cultivation, were highlighted by Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid , editor and compiler of the FAO report, at Emirates Environmental Group’s 4 th General Meeting of the year 2004, held yesterday (Tuesday, April 27, 2004) at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Dubai.
“ As a plant indigenous to the desert, the cultivation of date palm requires less investment and effort than the adoption of plant species from less arid regions. At a more significant level, date palm cultivation has been proven to play a crucial role in anti-desertification strategies world-wide,” said Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson, Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), the leading non-governmental organisation working in the field of environmental protection in the UAE, and the only organisation of its kind in the country to be accredited with the United Nations Convention for Combating Desertification . “ One of the important aspects of the UAE's desertification control and land reclamation policies has been the plantation of thousands of hectares of palm trees, woodlands and green belts.”
“The most obvious and important advantage of the desertification control policy that has encouraged date cultivation has been the transformation of the desert. The nomadic and unsettled lifestyle of people has changed into a settled one with the economic, health, social and educational patterns also changing accordingly,” explained Al Marashi. “On the one hand, countless farms throughout the UAE depend upon the date palm to create shaded areas of ground where vegetables are grown. On the other hand, the strategy of growing forests in vast areas of land in the heart of the desert has provided habitat for man, flora and fauna.”
The meeting sought to focus on strategies for increased date-palm cultivation, as well as highlight the challenges faced by date-palm cultivators in face of climatic changes and increasingly competitive world markets. Al Marashi explained the choice of an agro-economic issue for EEG’s general meeting by highlighting the fact that the financial benefits of an environmental measure will always have a crucial role to play in its success.
Professor Abdelouahhab Zaid, who is one of the most respected international experts on date palm cultivation, highlighted the global scenarios in the date palm market. He also shed light on the p otential benefit of date palm to UAE agriculture; Present situation of the UAE date palm culture; Constraints of the date industry; and Date palm varieties in UAE. Professor Zaid is the Chief Technical Advisor and Director of the Date Palm Research and Development Program in the United Arab Emirates , a project co-implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Arab Emirates University . Sand Lobster successfully bred in India
For the first time in the country, sand lobster has been successfully bred in captivity. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research achieved the breakthrough at its Chennai Research Centre. The success was achieved by a team, led by young scientist Jeo K. Kizhakudan at the Kovalam field laboratory after numerous trials. The only other country which has successfully bred the sand lobster is Australia. The sand lobster, Thenus Orientalis, has a short larval phase and this is a big advantage in developing commercially feasible hatchery technology. Fertilized eggs hatched out after an incubation period of 35 days. The final stage phyllosoma larvae settled as postlarvae twenty-five days after hatching. 14 % survival was achieved in the first attempt, but with improved feed and water management, higher survival is possible. The present success opens up a new area for commercialization of farming of the sand lobster for the export market. It will be a few more years before the entire package of technology is ready for commercialization. Scientists at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute are planning to start a pilot project to field test the results in the Tamil Nadu and Keral coastal areas.
New Job Rackets through Internet and Virtual Offices Loots Overseas Job Seekers
by V M Sathish K M Special
DUBAI – THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – A new recruitment syndicate has apparently duped many unemployed youth from Kerala and other parts of the country and the Middle East in a smart way using a virtual office on the Internet and a temporary office in the prestigious Emirates Towers building, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai. It is learned that a company called Saturnjobs registered an office in the Emirates Towers two months back and hosted a website (http://www.saturnjobs.com) offering lucrative jobs in various categories to qualified and not so qualified candidates. Unlike the normal visa racket, which cheats people by charging one lakh and above for visas, this “virtual” recruiting agent has been taking only 75 pounds equivalent to Indian Rupees Six thousand, 6300 per candidate as recruitment fees.
“We are getting many inquiries from relatives of people working in Dubai about Saturnjobs.com. It is true that the company has booked a temporary office space in the Emirates Towers Level 4 as a recruitment agent. However, they never opened the office. Temporary office space is available in the prestigious Emirates towers of Dubai to any international businessman by paying two months rent of few thousand dhirams,” says an Emirates Tower official. Believing that the virtual recruiting company (www.saturnjobs.com) with an office in the Emirates Towers - the tallest and landmark building in the UAE - must be a prestigious recruiting agent, many candidates have paid 75 pounds as recruitment fees, after they are convinced that international companies in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Saudi Arabia have lucrative job offers.
“We had a recruiting company called Saturnjobs here. They have closed office now,” said Emirates tower officials. However, they said many phone calls and letters are coming from people duped by the company. “Now we are sending back all the mails. People of many nationalities who have relatives in Dubai are making inquiries about this company,” said Emirates Tower sources.
"The attractively designed website offers more than 200 categories of jobs starting from accountant, secretary, window glazer to Plant Engineer and Software professionals. The company has not given any office phone or fax numbers and give special instruction to candidates to contact through emails only,” said Rajesh Kumar from Trivandrum, one of the victims, lured to the site through advertisement in newspapers and chat rooms.
Rajesh Nair (T.C 29/1380 Bhargavi Sadan Palkulangara Thiruvananthapuram 695024 India) is one of the victims who was offered a lucrative job through the website in a Tokyo based company as Accounts Assistant with a salary after taxes of 311,500 Japanese Yen Per Month equal to 129,288 Indian Rupees. The company maintains contacts with the candidates only through emails and the Internet, a clear indication that its intention was fraudulent. One Mr.Colin Sampson used to interact with the candidates.
