Eight Saudi Nationals Arrested in India for Visa Norm Violations, Preaching Islam

Baroda, July 1: The police in Bharuch, Gujarat, arrested nine foreigners for violating visa and immigration norms by making "inflammatory" speeches and preaching Islam in various parts of Bharuch since May 22. Eight of the arrested men are from Saudi Arabia and the ninth is from Sudan, reported the Asian Age.

The Gujarat police has also intimated the immigration department in New Delhi to deport them to their respective countries by July 6. "The local Intelligence Bureau, in a joint operation with the Bharuch city police, arrested the nine foreigners, who are members of the Tabligh-e-Jamat, on Tuesday morning. The Tabligh-e-Jamat is an international group of Islamic activists involved in promoting fundamentalism," the report said.

The Asian Age said quoting sources that a local Muslim leader had called in these nine persons to deliver speeches and make the Tabligh-e-Jamat active in India. Among the nine foreigners, one Omar Ramdan Ali Jhakaria belongs to Sudan. Alsobhi Ali Alia, Mohammed Al Gahamadi, Abdul Rehman Altohibi, Hasan S.N. Al Harabi, Mohammed S.F. Jibran, Abdul Aziz Alhadarani, Alwahatani Mohammed Mubarak and Alauffi Ahmed Salim hail from Saudi Arabia. The foreigners had been delivering speeches at Amod, Jambusar and Palej — Muslim-dominated areas in Bharuch. The police arrested them and during interrogation found they had been violating visa and immigration norms.

According to the police, these foreigners had arrived in Bharuch on May 22 and since then had been involved in religious propaganda in mosques and Muslim-dominated areas. The Asian Age quoted Bharuch superintendent of police, Mr Amarsingh Vasava, said, "The foreigners had sought tourist visas, but indulged in religious propaganda. Though we have not found any links with any international terrorist groups, we have initiated the procedure to deport them by July 6 to their respective countries although their visas are till October. We are also sending a recommendation to the government of India to bar their entry into India in future." It also quoted Bharuch deputy superintendent of police M.S. Bhabhur saying that the accused will be interrogated till Friday and subsequently sent to New Delhi to be deported.
