Jeddah : A common problem facing the law enforcement authorities in the Gulf region, breach of rules by the policemen themselves, is being addressed by the Saudi Arabian Government in a new fashion. The Saudi Public Security Department has started a new system which facilitates reporting by the public through telephone, fax and e-mail. People can directly send complaints about security personnel
According to Arabic Newspaper, Al-Riyadh, members of the general public can report any breach of rules by the Saudi security men by calling an exclusive phone number --989 --or by sending a message to fax number 01-4401010. Those who use emails can send messages to AMEN989@Yahoo.com.The paper quoting Saudi Lt. Gen. Asaad Al-Fareeh, director, public security, said that a special task force in the department will take acton on public complaints and proposals. The Saudi Police chief admitted to Al Riyadh that some Saudi policeman in uniform, especially the new recruits, might have been breaking regulations while dealing with the public - a common problem facing expatriates in other GCC countries too. What is popularly known as 'Vastha' (influence) and 'Thartheef', in the Gulf has influenced the police force as well.
The follow-up wing in the Saudi police department will pursue the shortcomings of security men who are reported. It will also take action on the complaints, observations and proposals with an aim at improving the performance level of the security personnel, Al-Fareeh said. If you dare to complain, send your complaints. But you have to give your full name, address and phone number. The police force in other Gulf countries too should follow this practice to avoid 'Vastha' and malpractice by some of their men in unform.
