Intervention package on sex education field-tested

Oct 31: An intervention package on sex education has been jointly developed and field-tested by India and the United States. This is to create a change in adolescence level of knowledge and attitude towards sexuality and reproductive health. An effort was also made to create an awareness among the existing sources of sex education vide parents, teachers and school administrators, regarding their role and responsibility in shaping adolescents knowledge and attitude towards human sexuality. This was disclosed at the just concluded two-day meeting of the Indo-US programme on contraceptive and reproductive health research in New Delhi.

Another significant issue discussed was male contraception, which addresses both fertility and infertility relevant to developed and developing countries alike. Indo-US collaborators, who are actively involved in research in this area, over the past few years, have achieved good leads and reached animal experimentation levels. Taking stock of the progress, the meeting noted that nine leading US institutions and sixteen Indian institutes are involved in this and are poised to achieve a breakthrough sooner or later.

One initiative actively being pursued by Indian researchers is the development of sperm-based vaccine, which is showing promising approach to contraception. The other studies are focusing among other things on hormonal methods and vasectomy, spermatogenesis and use of condoms. At present, contraception is lop-sided with more alternatives/burden for females. A need has been felt for male contraception and the Indo-US joint group discussed the role of men in reproductive health. The group also considered developing tools for cervical cancer screening, while discussing female reproductive health and research. Punjab ministers in sex scandal; BJP to order probe
