- Jerusalem; Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon spoke on Tuesday, December 18, 2001,
with US Secretary of State Colin Powell. Prime Minister Sharon
briefed Secretary Powell on the situation in the field, noting
that there have been 31 terror attacks in the past 48 hours in
which four Israeli civilians were wounded including one seriously
and one child.- Prime Minister Sharon said that the mortar firings, planting of
bombs and shooting attacks on the roads continue. Arafat
continues to give the green light to terrorism, is not arresting
terrorists and has taken no preventative actions to foil
terrorist attacks.- Prime Minister Sharon praised US Envoy General Anthony Zinni, and
his efforts to achieve a cease-fire. He stated that Israel will
continue to be committed to peace.

States asked to implement V.R.Krishna Iyer Report on Women prisoners

States to implement national expert committee report on Women prisoners
The recommendations of the National Expert Committee on Women Prisoners, headed by Shri Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, have been sent to the State Governments for implementation.The Committee had in 1987 recommended setting up of the Family Court or the Women's Court for dispensing justice to women prisoners. The Committee had also recommended that Nari Bandigriha Adalats be held as mobile judicial camps as an immediate modality for rendering speedy redress to women in custody in addition to the separate Women's Court or Family Court.
The administration of justice in the district and subordinate courts comes under the purview of the concerned State Governments and High Courts. It is within the prerogative of the State Governments and High Courts to set up such exclusive courts for women prisoners.

ISRO to complete Indigenous Cryogenic Energy by 2003

The fully indigenous cryogenic engine being developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) would be ready by 2003-04. According the ISRO there are no bottlenecks in the development of the indigenous engine other than the complexity involved in the technology.
Significant progress has been made in terms of erection and commissioning of the test facilities, realisation of the engine, production of liquid hydrogen from the in-house plant, initiation of qualification of engine and the fabrication of stage tankages and components.
Meanwhile, detailed engineering works connected with the second launch pad at SHAR centre in Shriharicota has been completed and continuous progress is being made in the civil works. The required equipment have also been ordered. The Government has allocated Rs. 305.22 crore for the project. The Department of Space is using infrastructures already created at ISRO centres and those available in industries, national laboratories and academic institutions to the maximum extent. An antenna test complex is also being built at the ISRO Satellite Centre, to enhance the availability of fabrication and test facilities.

DR. Venugopal appointed Dean of AIIMS
The Minister for Health and Family Welfare and President of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. C.P. Thakur, has appointed Dr. P. Venugopal, Professor & Head of the Cardio-Vascular Surgery of the Institute full-time Dean of AIIMS. Dr. Venugopal is the senior most Professor in AIIMS. Earlier Dr. R.B. Vajpayee was appointed Acting Dean. Dr. Thakur has constituted a Collegium of Deans consisting of 42 faculty members including Professor, Additional Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors. The Collegium will assist the Director and the Dean in the all round development of AIIMS. The areas identified are examinations, academics, PG and UG studies, student welfare, research and coordination.
